Bill Standing Tournament – Sunday 13 September – a Tribute

The BILL STANDING Tournament was first held in 1996 after Bill died of a heart attack in the early hours of New Year’s morning that year. He was in his mid-fifties.

Bill was chair of HC&LTC for over a decade before he died. He was also the Club coach and, along with his partner Eamonn, built up the junior section from scratch.

He is remembered by the hundreds of young people he coached, as well as by adult members who were here at the time: Liz and Ahmad; Peter Oliver; Carol Lee; Andy Newton; Martin Ilett; Tim Kineally and others.

Bill spent nearly all of his weekends and evenings at Highgate and his criteria for membership was: ‘If you love tennis, you’re welcome.’

This will be the 19th Tournament held in Bill’s name. It marks his passion for the game and his contribution to making Highate the kind of club it is today.
