Bill Standing Tournament – Sunday 10 September 2017 – 2pm
BILL STANDING was chair of HC<C for over a decade before he died of a heart attack in the early hours of New Year’s morning 1996. He was in his mid-fifties.
He was also the club coach and, along with his partner, Eamonn, built up the junior section from scratch.
Bill spent nearly all of his weekends and most of his evenings in Highgate and his criteria for whether someone could join was: ‘if you love tennis you’re welcome.’
He is remembered by the hundreds of young people he coached, as well as by adult members who were here at that time: Liz and Ahmad; Andy Newton; Richard Colbey; Carol Lee; Tim Kineally and others.
This is the 21st tournament held in Bill’s name. It marks his passion for tennis and his contribution to making Highgate the kind of club it is today.
