Monday Night Winter League – statistics, good players, and WINNERS

A pleasant evening last night, playing tennis, announcing all results AND Amy and Chanya back!

Results and statistics

Photo’s are below and Ranking and Results are here.

First of all, thanks to Roger for running the evenings (for he’s a jolly good fellow!).  And thanks to Amy and Chanya for hanging around till late on most Monday evening’s providing food and drinks despite having quite a low number of customers this year!

Statistics

Last year 33 members gave Monday night a try and this year it was 38 members, but 5 members turned up only once, and only 13 turned up enough to qualify for the tournament.13 members who didn’t play with us last year joined in and that includes 6 members who have never played with us before. This year we had the chance of playing for 23 evenings, but wet weather and Christmas and New Year dates meant we only played for 19 evenings.

Most Dedicated members

So there has been 19 nights play. Roger and John attended for 17 weeks and contributed £85 to the club. But only one member attended for 18 evenings and contributed £90 to the club and that’s Richard Caira (for he’s a jolly good fellow?).

Most Improved Players!

Just one Monday night player who only played with us for the first time this year has done quite well.  New member Paul moved down a little bit at first to half way down the ranking list by his second week, but then by the beginning of March he had moved up 13 places to third place on the list – not sure what happened last week as he moved back down to number 7!

BUT, the “OFFICIAL” most Improved Players are those that played both last year and this year but there were not very many significant moves upward this year!

So, one member was at position 28 out of 32 last year, and this year she has moved up 9 places to position 19 out of 32, and that’s Sally Darling. One other member spent most of last year at position 25 out of 32 and this year he has moved up 12 places to 13 out of 32 and that’s Tony Westbrook (for he’s a jolly good fellow).

Now The Main Tournament prizes

This year only 13 members turned up enough evenings to qualify, and 25 members did NOT turn up enough evenings to qualify!

For those of you NOT familiar with it, one of the nicest aspects of the winter league is that you do not have to be the highest ranked player to win, but you DO have to be consistent with your scoring.

Firstly the women’s section

In third women’s place, with an average score of 3.56 points per match– Sheila.

In second women’s place, with and average score of 3.58 points per match – Geraldine.

And the woman who is only fourth in the overall tournament (which is a little unusual) but is the winner of the women’s section with and average score of 3.74 points per match – Jayne Forbes (for she’s a jolly good femow)

Now, the men’s section

If Mat had played 2 more weeks he could have won. But he didn’t.

This year in third place, with an average score of 3.75 points per match – Nick Taylor.

In second place with an average score of 3.8 points per match– new member Paul Coldwell.

And the men’s first place this year AND the winner of the whole tournament with an amazing average score of 4 points for each match – Tony Westbrook. (he’s twice a jolly good fellow?)
