Bill Standing tournament 2017

After somewhat heretical talk of the tournament’s demise last year, the 21st Bill Standing tournament was held on Sunday 10 September. Lowering clouds and an adverse weather report did make play seem doubtful for a while, but not long after the schedule starting time 16 enthusiastic participants were assembled, and divided up into largely gender based groups- pink for the boys and blue for the girls with the Valarche mother daughter combination given a somewhat improbable temporary sex change. After five hard fought group matches Antonio, Sarah, Ewa and Phil emerged as  finalists, Elena V. missing out on a final slot on the toss of a coin. Tournament organiser Richard C, decided to keep Antonio and Ewa apart in the final to prevent a direct repeat of last year’s victory. With the skies darkening, Antonio and Sarah carried off a comfortable victory to take the trophy and the 25% off Tesco Prosecco- see attached photo showing their joint excitement- Ewa and Phil got the Poundland Toblerone, though Ewa kindly donated hers back to the remaining competitors. Juliet, Elena, Margaux and Marta, who would have been semi-finalists received their prize of a Metro Bank free pen- Richard spares no expense when it comes to prizes. Thanks to Carol, who gave a short but really nice speech about Bill, and Liz for their help. Until next year….
